The early Chinese music was mostly instrumental music played on solo instruments or in small ensembles comprised of plucked and bowed stringed instruments, flutes, cymbals, gongs, and drums.
It wasn’t until the early 1900s, during the New Culture Movement, that Chinese music began to draw on the various musical styles of Western music. Symphony orchestras were soon formed in most major cities, playing music that is clearly influenced by jazz with a smattering of xylophones, saxophones, and violins.
